Dear All At Mantec
Sorry it has been so long since the last update. We have been pretty busy navigating the Amazon, visiting the very low lying Guyana and we are now in Venezuela. Thank you very much Mantec for all your support with our expedition. It is really much appreciated.
In Northern Brazil we had a great success because our 'Message in a Bottle' containing the letters from hundreds of school children was found in Fortaleza. We were reunited with the bottle to much media acclaim and students in Brazil wrote replies to the letters.
We then headed up the Amazon by boat to find out about how buffalo are trampling the floodplain, soya farmers are cutting down the rainforest and to visit the extraordinary opera house in Manaus. There are some photos on the website but plenty more coming soon.
Of all the countries we have visited so far Guyana has the most problems with rising sea levels as most of the population lives below sea level protected by some slightly crumbling sea walls. We visited a protected patch of rainforest to have a look at how ecotourism works, spent a few days on a ranch pretending to be cowboys and chatted to the Guyanese Prime Minister at the Queen's birthday party. We had some interesting driving on the way to the ranch 50 miles on some pretty bad roads. We also managed a successful live link up between schools in Georgetown and Cumbria.
Our education project continues to grow with two more schools joining in Brazil. The photo competition has attracted entrants from South Africa, Sierra Leone and Swansea amongst other places. The Royal Geographical Society is lining up a world famous explorer to judge the entries on July 10th.
Next we are heading to Caracas and then into Colombia where we will have to decide where we ship our Land Rover to in Central America. Then we will be visiting lots of schools in the US before returning to the UK from Canada.
You can also get more news of Atlantic Rising through Twitter and follow our progress on Facebook. We have revamped our website and now have a message board - so please leave us a note.
Best wishes,
Lynn, Tim and Will
